" DISTANTE " Underdogs Gallery

In "Distante," the Unidigrazz collective confronts the audience with an exploration of the complex narratives inherent in the periphery-center dichotomy, represented by the 33-minute journey between Rossio and Algueirão-Mem Martins stations on the Sintra Line. A seemingly brief train ride transformed into a metaphor laden with significance, revealing profound divisions between contrasting realities and unequal destinies.

Drawing from the real and personal experiences of its members, the exhibition incorporates a multifaceted creative vision, challenging conventional perceptions through a frontal clash with the segregation that shapes urban perspectives. Highlighting much more than just the geographical distance between territories, "Distante" reflects on the inequality permeating society, addressing issues of mobility, culture, education, housing, documentation, police violence, and racism. Here, the collective reveals the chasms between distinct realities, recounting stories that resonate with their own marginalization, as well as their reality as a group of artists seeking to redefine the narrative of their locale.

Featuring works in drawing and painting, as well as interventions in mixed media, a large-scale installation titled "Marquizz" stands out. Present in the exhibition as a literal space of expression, it represents life in urban peripheries, intimacy, and familial bonds, also symbolizing the connection between the domestic environment and the public space.

At its essence, "Distante" is a captivating, introspective, and personal exploration of human and social experiences in a divided urban context. In the words of the artists themselves: Unidigrazz is a consequence, a continuation of something [that already exists]; of the work of street rappers, writers, poets, of all mothers. The art produced by the collective recounts a time that has already been lived or is being lived, through the perspective and creation of those who inhabit that reality. It is more than the artistic world. It is what they see and live.
