48 Artistas, 48 Anos de Liberdade

My intention with this painting is to portray the difficulty faced by individuals who are striving to promote the culture of a local area and make a mark in the world, allowing them to live rather than merely survive in it. It is necessary to come to the city center, which is Lisbon, to be seen and to find the opportunities that can help realize these dreams. However, this core does not always provide equal opportunities nor actively seeks to provide the same stage for everyone. All these emotions stay on the other side of the fence, constantly painted as something different.

When in the city center, in the nucleus, events like the death of Alcindo, which occurred on June 10, 1995, and similar occurrences, where the response to such situations should be different, highlight that there is still much work to be done. "48 artists, 48 years of freedom" is the name of the piece that will symbolically be created on June 10, 2022, in the Gardens of MAAT, a collective mural intervention that reinterprets the "Painel do Mercado do Povo" (Market of the People Panel) created by the Democratic Movement of Visual Artists on June 10, 1974, in Belém. The reinterpretation of this mural, measuring 24 meters in length and 3 meters in width, involves the participation of 48 artists. Some of these artists were involved in the creation of the original panel, while others are artists who have stood out in the art scene over the last 48 years of democracy in Portugal, which is being celebrated this year. Some of these artists are also part of the "Interferências: Culturas Urbanas Emergentes" (Interferences: Emerging Urban Cultures) exhibition at MAAT.

The initiative was inspired by the "Interferências" exhibition, curated by Alexandre Farto, António Brito Guterres, and Carla Cardoso, which is on display at the MAAT building until September 5, 2022. This exhibition explores various expressions of urban culture, examining narrative paths through the city in a dialogue that emphasizes the museum as a critical space, a meeting place for various communities and sensibilities – those established that frequent it and those marginalized who are unfamiliar with it. "Interferências" brings contemporary artists who use the streets as a context for expression and experimentation into dialogue with works from institutional and private collections, highlighting alternative narratives that aim to engage the public, inviting them to reflect on what kind of city, urban spaces, and artistic and cultural institutions can be built by bringing new voices into the process.

"48 artists, 48 years of freedom" is also a reflection of the desire to bring together artists from various disciplines, backgrounds, and generations to create a new, more inclusive, and democratic city through collective moments and sharing. The creation of the piece "48 artists, 48 years of freedom" will take place throughout the day on June 10, from 10 AM to 10 PM, in the outdoor space surrounding the Nafta Depot, and the public is invited to witness the intervention. This initiative, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic, is part of the programming for the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution (April 25, 1974) and the Lisbon Festivities. There will also be street food stalls from various communities in Lisbon and a musical program curated by the Iminente Festival, featuring various expressions of urban culture, including breaking and breaking battles, as well as performances by Juana na Rap and PRÉTU Xullaji. You can find the complete program here. Artists: ±MaisMenos±, Alice Geirinhas, Ana Aragão, Ana Pérez-Quiroga, Ana Vidigal, Ângela Ferreira, António Alves, Blac Dwelle, Borderlovers (Pedro Amaral), Carlos No, Carlos Stock, David Evans, Diogo Carvalho, Emília Nadal, Eurico Gonçalves, Fernanda Fragateiro, Fidel Évora, Filipa Bossuet, Francisco Vidal, Gabriel Abrantes, Guilherme Parente, Joana Vasconcelos, José Aurélio, Lima Carvalho, Manicómio, Manuel Botelho, Manuel João Vieira, Maria Imaginário, Mariana Duarte Santos, Mariana Gomes, Moami31, Noah Zagalo, Obey SKTR, Onun Trigueiros, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Pedro Portugal, Petra Preta, Rappepa, Sara & André, Sepher Awk, Sérgio Pombo, Susana Gaudêncio, Tamara Alves, Teresa Dias Coelho, Teresa Magalhães, Vhils, Xana.
